A very common question is how do I watch 3D TV with out glasses. The answer is that this technology, often referred to as Autostereoscopy, has not yet been released for home television. There are several TV manufactures, Philips and Sharp appear to be the leaders, working on technology that allows watching of 3D TV without glasses. Philips was even planning on releasing a TV that offered this in 2011, however the release has been pushed back due to the lack of consumer demand for 3D TVs. A new release date has not been scheduled, however it is nice to know that the technology is fairly close to being released. What we are seeing is the ability to watch 3D content without glasses on cell phones, computer monitors and handheld video games. You may ask, why these items what do they provide that a television does not?

The reason for release on these items first is that the viewer normally sits directly in front of these items. The challenge with this technology is that the 3D viewing angle is not very good. Meaning that to see 3D images, the viewers need to be directly in front of the device. This will not work well for televisions, especially since more and more families have arranged their rooms for newer technologies such as LCD TVs where the viewing angles are over 140 degrees. No doubt manufactures are working on improving this, however it may be that the first TVs released with this will have a limited viewing angle.

So what is available in the mean time? There are some cell phones offering this now. Hitachi offers one for instance. Also the next Nintendo handheld video game system will offer 3D TV without glasses. And there are a few computer monitors that have been available for some time. Some have been removed from the market and some are still available. The best approach to finding devices that support this is look at devices from Hitachi, Philips and Sharp.
