The Sony Playstation 3 now plays 3D Blu Ray discs making PS3 3D TV a reality. The Playstation 3 has always been known to have Blu Ray capabilities but late in 2009 Sony announced there would be a software upgrade that would allow the PS3 to play 3D Blu Ray discs. This is rare amongst Blu Ray players as most Blu Ray players purchased a year to two ago are not upgradeable to play 3D discs.
Note, this article is focused on PS3 3D TV, however we have over 100 articles on 3D content on the website. Below are several other articles that may be of interest to you.
Not Just 3D TV The PS3 3D upgrades are not just about watching 3D Blu Ray on TV. Sony has also provided an upgrade that converts 2D games to 3D games. This is not as realistic as playing real 3D games, but it does add a new dimension to existing 2D games until more 3D games are available on the market.
3D TVs Of course to watch 3D TV you will need a TV that supports 3D. If you do not have one or are not sure of the capabilities of your TV, see 3D TVs for more information. In addition to the TV you will also need 3D TV glasses, however obtain the TV first and make sure the glasses are the same brand as the TV.
3D Content In addition to a 3D Blu Ray player and 3D video games, other ways to obtain 3D content are 3D set top boxes and converting 2D TV to 3D. Direct TV will be the first to offer 3D channels offering three channels in 2010, however the cable companies will quickly follow. In addition some 3D TVs have functionality that convert 2D TV programming to 3D. Similar to video game upgrades, 2D TV upgrades are not as good as watching true 3D content. But once again, until more 3D content is available it does add a new twist to existing programming.
